the medieval workshop model books were the beginning and end of artistic
production. They contained finished drawings of compositions and figures,
which were copies of work carried out by the shop. These completed ideas
were kept on bound parchment sheets as models for future work. When needed,
these models were transferred to the panel or wall of the finished work
to serve as its basis. Variations were introduced during execution. Drawings
of significant works by other masters and classical antiquities were also
kept in the model book. |
